The warming climate is forcing marathons to consider changes to keep runners cool

Marathon organizers are shifting race dates, moving start times earlier and offering shortened routes as climate change pushes temperatures up. The Twin Cities Marathon will move off the first Sunday in October starting in 2027 after a 2023 cancellation, and Sioux Falls moved its race from August to September. A Climate Central study of 221 races found that by 2045, optimal conditions would be less likely at 46 of the 51 U.S. marathons analyzed.
