On the trail of the Mona Lisa
The briefing
A Spokesman-Review graphic feature marks the 115th anniversary of the Aug. 21, 1911, theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre. Vincenzo Perugia, a carpenter who had helped build the painting's protective case, hid overnight in a storage room and walked out with the painting beneath a smock. The masterpiece was missing 29 months before Perugia tried to sell it in Florence and it was returned to the Louvre in January 1914.
