A survey of 1,500 American Christians found that many who hold Christian nationalist beliefs also endorse religious pluralism in principle. But that support does not translate into political tolerance because of perceptions that Christians face threats to their way of life and freedom. The researchers conclude the root problem is not a lack of support for pluralism but a sense of threat that can trigger authoritarian tendencies toward disliked groups.
