94-year-old Camp Zanika faces financial blow from smoke cancellations
The briefing
Camp Zanika Lache on Lake Wenatchee cancelled three of its eight summer sessions because of wildfire smoke, taking a financial hit of nearly $200,000. With 222 children signed up for the last three sessions and smoke not qualifying for insurance assistance, the nonprofit faces roughly $20,000 a month in operating costs. Executive director Theresa Samuelsen said the camp needs about $158,000 to reach next June and is accepting donations while some families roll fees into next year.
