UW pays professor $600K to settle lawsuit over parody land acknowledgment
The briefing
The University of Washington agreed to pay $600,000 to computer sciences professor Stuart Reges to settle a lawsuit after a federal appeals court ruled the school violated his free speech rights. Reges was disciplined in 2022 for including a parody land acknowledgment in his syllabus that mocked the university's statement honoring the Coast Salish peoples. While the university maintains it acted appropriately, the settlement includes no admission of wrongdoing.
